Wow this last month just flew by. I’ve been way too busy to post here but I wanted to make sure I at least do Max’s monthly updates just like I did for his sister! I started back at work so that’s been hectic figuring out our new schedule and how to juggle 2 kids. And another big deal was that Max started daycare! We decided to put him into daycare because he was refusing the bottle and it was just too hard for my inlaws to deal with it. Even though I am sad we had to put him into daycare so early I’m sure it was the right decision! And once he is better about taking the bottle we plan on putting him with the inlaws again. I’m so thankful he is there this past month because it’s been SO HOT lately and the daycare is nice and air conditioned! So at the very least he’s cool 🙂
– I think the day after he turned 2 months he started smiling!!! It was the best thing ever. It’s so sweet when he gives us his smiles. I love baby smiles more than anything!!!!
– started sucking on his hands
– blows bubbles
– makes the cutest frown/pouty faces
– neck control is getting really strong! He can pretty much hold it up on his own now
– still refusing the bottle, even after a week at daycare 🙁
– still in size 1 diapers
– wearing some 0-3 and 3-6 month clothing
– not sure how much he weighs but on our home scale he is 12+ lbs!
– had his first night with a babysitter. actually this was the first time ever that we used a paid babysitter!
– and still really hates his car seat. so much!
– starting to enjoy toys. He really likes this one:
A rare family pic
Didn’t realize how grainy this pic was…but I love it!
His expressions crack me up
Like this one on his first day of daycare
I am loving him more and more each day!
Some milestones and updates for Max’s 2nd month:
– started cooing
– is the 20th percentile in weight at 10 lbs and 12 oz! This is quite an accomplishment for us since Emma was always 5% or under
– mostly stopped leaking from his diapers
– is wearing size 1 diapers and 0-3 month clothing
– his hair is growing like crazy and we are thinking of shaving it soon. everyone who sees him asks how old he is and is in awe of how much hair he has!
– very squirmy and active, even the DR commented on it at his 2 month appt
– is starting to stay awake more
– started rejecting the bottle 🙁
– threw up 3 times! at first I thought it was because I was overfeeding him but DR just told me I need to take breaks and give him time to digest his food.
– really hates car rides and his car seat (just like his sister when she was a baby)
– survived his first all day outing with us in Ventura
– starting to track objects with his eyes
– cradle cap and baby acne is almost gone!
This month, Max has been a bit more difficult. He is awake more and the whole bottle feeding thing is stressing us out since I go back to work in 3 weeks. He’s still not as bad as Emma in my opinion though. It’s harder to keep him asleep when you put him down and it’s been way too hot to swaddle him which I think would help a lot with that. Sometimes I think he is smiling at me but I think it’s just my imagination. I’m really looking forward to that milestone!
Max and his grandfather (my dad!)
The only time he’s happy in the car seat is when he is sleeping!
Big sister always wants to hold his hand. Not sure how he feels about that yet.
Max’s serious face:
Lastly…a family selfie on one of Max’s first family outing to the Anaheim Packing House. Max loves the Solly wrap!
The Complete Adventures of Curious George: 70th Anniversary Edition – Even though there are several stories in this book, Emma makes me read the same 2 stories over and over again!
Popcorn with Coconut Oil – I have to admit we are both addicted to this! Emma just loves eating popcorn in general. But I really like the taste that coconut oil add to it. Plus it’s so much healthier than using butter! I use this recipe.
Lil Critters Fruit and Veggie Vitamins – I’m on the fence about vitamins for kids so I see these more as a treat for Emma and another way to sneak in some veggies? She LOVES these and I usually tell her she can have one after she brushes her teeth which makes her a little more willing to brush than normal. Even though they recommend giving 2, I give her just 1 a day.
Bubbles – like every 2 year old…Emma is obsessed with bubbles. She is loving them right now and it has been a fun outdoor activity this summer
I can’t believe this little guy has been with us for a whole month already!
Some milestones and updates:
– Longest stretch of nighttime sleep: 5.5. hours and it was glorious!
– Can lift his head and hold for several seconds (and in fact enjoys tummy time!)
– At his 2 week appointment, he was 7lbs 3 ozes. Minh weighed him last night on our home scale (which is very unreliable) but says he was close to 9 lbs!
– Sleeps unswaddled
– Has a very strong grip and strong kicks (which I could tell even in the womb)
– BFs every 2-3 hours and has had a great latch from the start
– Is also taking 1 bottle a day and sometimes takes the pacifier
– Prefers Huggies diapers
– Poops a ton. Almost every diaper change.
– Finally starting to fit his newborn clothes and even some of his 3 month sized clothes!
– Still sleeps a ton but will stay awake 15 mins – 1 hour at times
Maternity leave has been much more enjoyable this time around. I’m just a more relaxed mama and Max is also easier. He cries when he’s hungry, has a dirty diaper, or is sleepy but if he’s awake he’s content to just lay there and observe. Emma never let me put her down awake for more than 5 minutes! He’s been eating well but he’s been sounding very congested. I keep reading it’s normal so I hope he grows out of it soon because sometimes it feels like it interferes with his eating (ie. can’t breathe and starts choking on the milk). His baby acne and cradle cap is at an all-time high as well but I’m not as worried about it this time since Emma had it as well and her skin is so nice now! I’m excited to take him out next month now that we are done with the 1 month confinement!
Now for some pictures from the past month:
I have a new favorite product: Jojoba Oil ($7.99 on Amazon)!
For Mommy: I have horribly dry skin, especially on my face! I’ve tried all different types of moisturizers but as soon as I put on any type of foundation…it starts flaking! So annoying. I even use tinted moisturizer and it still makes my face flake (even after using a completely different moisturizer beforehand). And recently while I was pregnant, I was pretty limited in what products I was willing to use since I try to use more “natural” products since I’m paranoid. So I was super excited when I tried Jojoba Oil for the first time and it worked for my dry skin while also being pretty safe (as far as I can tell). It keeps my face moisturized and does not clog my pores. Miracle! I’ve been reading you can also add some to your conditioner to soften your hair as well but I haven’t tried that yet. So to moisturize my face, I just put a few drops on my fingers and rub it into my face. Easy peasy!
For Baby: So just like Emma, Max is developing horrible baby acne and cradle cap (or cradle crap as we like to call it har har). Last time we didn’t do much for Emma since I read it wasn’t harmful, just annoying for the parents because their babies do not look very cute when they are going through this stage! This time, since I happened to have jojoba oil on hand and since I read it works wonders for cradle cap I decided to give it a try on Max! I’ve only applied it once so far but most of the yellow gunk came right off after a few minutes! We’ll see how it goes in the next few weeks. So to apply to baby, just place a drop on your finger and rub into affected area. You can leave it on for up to 2 hours to really get absorbed. If it’s on the scalp, run a soft comb through the hair to brush out the flakes. If on the face or other body parts, you can just use a small towel to wipe off.
Sorry this is a little late! Here’s what Emma was loving this past month:
Ravensburger My First Puzzle (Adorable Animals) – I’m really trying to get Emma into puzzles as a I heard it’s good for brain development. She seems to struggle with jigsaw puzzles though so I thought this beginner set would be good practice. Luckily she instantly loved this and is able to do it pretty easily!! She still sometimes struggles with fitting the pieces together but it’s great practice for her fine motor skills. I highly recommend this if you are looking to introduce jigsaw puzzles to your little ones!
H&M Strawberry Jersey Dress – Can you believe these dresses are only $5? Emma loves the strawberry one so much that we bought her 2 more in different prints. These are so comfortable and easy to wear…wish they had them in my size!
Elmo Goodnight Stories Musical Lullaby – this book was a hand me down from my sister’s kids but Emma loves it! She makes me read it to her every night. Its comprised of a bunch of short stories that each include a lullaby. It also has a button you can press that plays Brahms Lullaby song that Emma loves to press while I sing.
Green Toys Tea Set – We got this set from a friend and both Emma and I love it because you can use real drinks and food with it! It also lets Emma practice pouring. So fun!
Little Bunny Series Seek and Finds – These seek and find coloring sheets are a big hit with Emma. She loves finding the objects and gets so excited when she finds them. The best part? It’s free!
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – We’ve been trying to keep Emma from watching too much Caillou and this has quickly become her new favorite. I also love this show and the lessons Emma learns from it…ranging anywhere from trying new foods, going to the DR, and having a babysitter. The songs always get stuck in my head though!
Watermelon – summer means tasty and fresh watermelon! One of Emma’s favorite fruits. We also love drinking watermelon juice
Hopefully I’ll be posting more to this series as summer goes on and partaking in some of these events after I finish my 1 month rest after the baby (it’s a traditional asian thing enforced by my mom :P).
I am always looking for fun things to do outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful weather we have here in socal. One thing kids love (at least mine) is MUSIC! So what better way to enjoy the summer than to take the kids to an outdoor concert in the park. It turns out the Huntington Beach Central Library puts on a summer concert series.
